Studies include focus on the Chinese language with opportunities for overseas immersion into the Chinese culture, and the Reading Opens Doors program for all ages.

Carroll County Government    |    2010 to 2014

Title:  Carroll County Commissioner

I served as one of five Commissioners elected to manage the $520 million dollar budget, 900 employees, and laws and policies of Carroll County.
Accomplishments include:

  • Instrumental in building a coalition of rural counties which formally became a part of the Maryland Association of Counties
  • Educating legislators
  • Facilitating the use of new technologies to create opportunities for economic development
  • Providing solutions and resources for constituent concerns
  • Networking with businesses and non-profits during regularly scheduled industry visits to learn about and solve challenges

  • Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives for Agriculture
  • Maryland Association of Counties Board of Directors and Legislative Committee
  • Carroll County Local Management Board, and the Business Round Table.

Liaison between local, state, and federal governments—particularly in the area of volunteerism and community initiatives, in order to:

  • Facilitate partnerships and promote/support non-profit, community, and faith based organizations to accomplish their individual and collective missions
  • Advise on legislation, educational opportunities, and family resources in order to aid the non-profit community in building safe and productive communities.

A couple initiatives I promoted that came to fruition include:

  • Creating new programs to accelerate agricultural preservation; forming first partnership with Post-Secondary Program,
  • Giving youth with disabilities work experience in county government
  • Developing The Alliance – A Board of 14 sectors of the community represented by over 50 organizations with the goal of marketing services, identifying gaps in service and finding shared solutions to community issues.
